Corpus Christi Sunday – Parish First Holy Communion Homily – 7 June 2026
Today is a very special day. It is the Feast of Corpus Christi, the feast on which the Church celebrates the greatest gift Jesus left us before He returned to His Father: the gift of his very life in the Eucharist. And today is especially joyful because our children will receive their First Holy Communion.
Children, today is a day you will remember for the rest of your lives. You have received many gifts over the years. Perhaps a favourite toy, a special book, a bicycle, or a gift for your birthday or Christmas. But today you are receiving something infinitely greater than any present anyone could ever give you. Today you receive Jesus Himself. Not simply a reminder of Jesus. Not simply a symbol of Jesus. Not simply a story about Jesus. Jesus gives himself to you. When the priest holds up the sacred bread and says, “The Body of Christ,” we know that it is truly Jesus who comes to us under the appearance of bread. This is why we treat the Eucharist with such reverence. This is why we come forward with such care. We are coming to meet a person who loves us.
Children, when you receive Jesus today, remember that He wants to be your friend for life. Speak to Him often. Thank Him. Tell him about your worries. Tell him about your joys. Ask him for help. The same Jesus who walked with his disciples in Galilee now walks beside us. And most importantly, when we receive the Body of Christ, we are called to become the Body of Christ for others: to be people who forgive, who serve, who care for the lonely, who welcome the stranger, and who bring peace wherever we go. That is why the Mass always ends with a mission. We are fed by Christ so that we may carry Christ into the world.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks words that are among the most extraordinary he ever spoke: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” Jesus is teaching us that the Eucharist is not simply something we receive; it is someone we receive. He offers us his very self as food for our journey through life. Just as our bodies need food to grow strong, our souls need the nourishment that only Christ can give. Through Holy Communion, Jesus comes to dwell within us in a unique and intimate way. He strengthens us when we are weak, comforts us when we are troubled, forgives us when we fail, and fills us with the life of God. The Eucharist is God’s answer to the deepest hunger of the human heart: our longing for love, for meaning, for hope, and for life that never end.
And there is something important for all of us adults to remember as well. Parents, grandparents, godparents, the greatest gift we can give our children is not simply a celebration today but our example tomorrow. Our children will learn what the Eucharist means by watching us. They will notice whether Sunday Mass is important to us. They will notice whether we pray. They will notice whether we speak about God in our homes. They will notice whether we return week after week to receive the Bread of Life.
And so, children, at this Mass you will come forward to receive Jesus for the first time. As you do, remember this simple truth: Jesus knows your name. Jesus loves you. Jesus wants to stay close to you. And every time you come to Holy Communion throughout your life, He will be waiting for you. May this First Holy Communion be the beginning of a lifelong journey of friendship with Jesus and may all of us gathered here today grow ever deeper in our love for the Lord who gives Himself to us entirely in the Eucharist.
